Internationally qualified medical radiation practitioners

To work as a medical radiation practitioner in Australia, you must be registered with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (the Board).

There are three divisions of registration for medical radiation practitioners in Australia: diagnostic radiography, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine technology. You can be registered in more than one division. When you apply, we will ask you which division(s) you wish to apply for.

Pathways to registration

There are different pathways to registration and practice in Australia for medical radiation practitioners who have gained their qualifications outside Australia.

Read the information on the registration pathways page to find out which registration pathway is right for you.

You may be eligible for streamlined registration if you currently hold registration and a practising certificate in New Zealand, or, if your qualification is on the Board’s list of recognised international qualifications.

If your qualification is not in either of these categories, you will need to have it assessed and depending on the outcome you may need to successfully complete the Board’s National exam for medical radiation practice.

To see the pathways at a glance, download the Pathways to registration in Australia for internationally qualified medical radiation practitioners’ flowchart (241 KB,PDF).

Apply for registration

Further information about the registration process is available on the international health practitioners page of the Ahpra website.

You may also need to have a visa to work and live in Australia. We cannot advise you on visa eligibility.

We recommend that you do not apply for work or set up a practice until you are registered. We cannot influence employment outcomes or help you find employment.

This page provides information only for internationally qualified medical radiation practitioners. General information about registration as an internationally qualified health practitioner is available on our International health practitioners page.
