Registration pathways for internationally qualified medical radiation practitioners

Applicants from New Zealand

New Zealand medical radiation practitioners who hold a current practising certificate

If you are a medical radiation practitioner with current New Zealand registration with the Medical Radiation Technologists Board (NZ) as a medical imaging technologist, radiation therapist or nuclear medicine technologist, and hold a current practising certificate, you can apply for general registration as a medical radiation practitioner in Australia. This is under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997.

New Zealand qualified medical radiation practitioners who do not hold a current practising certificate

If you have a qualification(s) from New Zealand but do not hold a current New Zealand practising certificate, you cannot apply for general registration under Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition arrangements. You should apply for general registration and provide details of your New Zealand medical radiation practice qualification in your application.

In either case, you must also ensure you have read and can meet the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia’s registration standards.

For information on how to apply, go to the Applying for registration page.

Applicants from countries other than New Zealand

If you have a qualification as a medical radiation practitioner from a country other than New Zealand, you must show that you are qualified. The qualification requirements are outlined in section 52 and 53 of the National Law and are explained below.

There are three pathways to meet the qualification requirements. We will use the information you include on your application form to decide which pathway applies to you.

This pathway applies to you if you are applying for registration in the division of diagnostic radiography and/or radiation therapy and your qualification is from a country where the local regulator of medical radiation practice is recognised by the Board as a comparable regulator. Your qualification must have been accredited by that regulator at the time you completed your studies.

For the divisions of diagnostic radiographer and radiation therapist, these countries and regulators are:

  • Ireland (CORU)
  • United Kingdom (HCPC)

Visit the Is my qualification recognised? page to check if the Board recognises your CORU- or HCPC- accredited qualification.

This pathway is not available for internationally qualified nuclear medicine technologists.

This pathway applies to you if we have:

  • previously assessed the same qualification as yours (same institution, same year, same degree title), and
  • considered it to be substantially equivalent, or based on similar competencies, to an approved qualification

This pathway is open to internationally qualified medical radiation practitioners from all divisions including diagnostic radiographers, radiation therapists and nuclear medicine technologists.

Visit the Is my qualification recognised? page to check if the Board already recognises your qualification. For information on how to apply for general registration as a medical radiation practitioner, go to the Applying for registration page.

This pathway applies to you if we need to assess your medical radiation practice qualification(s) to advise you if you are qualified for general registration.

This pathway is open to internationally qualified medical radiation practitioners from all divisions including diagnostic radiographers, radiation therapists and nuclear medicine technologists.

We will need to assess your qualification(s) if you do not have a qualification that the Board already recognises. We must assess your qualification portfolio before you apply for registration. A qualification portfolio means all your qualifications in medical radiation practice. There are three possible assessment outcomes:

  • Your qualification is substantially equivalent, or based on similar competencies, to an approved qualification.
  • Your qualification is relevant to the medical radiation practice profession.
  • You are not qualified for registration in Australia.

Submit this form to us to have your qualification portfolio assessed:

  • Portfolio for the assessment of non-approved qualifications – PNAQ-91 - coming soon

For information on how we use the data we collect, please see the collection statement.

  • Collection statement for medical radiation practice for the assessment of non-approved qualifications form - coming soon

You can find information about this pathway and the criteria we use to assess qualifications on the Assessment of international qualifications page.
